There are a number of Piers along San Francisco's Embarcadero but only Pier 7 has this amazing view of the Transamerica tower perfectly aligned through the many vintage street lights that run down each side of the pier. The lighting from the sodium vapor lamps is quite harsh compared to the city lights but the recent rains helped create a nice textured reflection off the worn wooden deck. I helped stylize the image by pulling up the light in the sky and pushing the saturation on very specific colors while toning down the yellow orange typical of a sodium vapor lamp. It gave the image a somewhat nostalgic feel that perfectly captured the strange moody feeling of being totally alone out on the pier at night.

The area is strewn with history and was part of the seedier side of the San Francisco's early days during the Gold Rush. It's now become a major area for tourism and is beautifully decorated with many of San Francisco's finest shops and restaurants. It's rare that you find the pier empty even at night and if often lined with people fishing, crabbing, jogging or just out for a stroll but I guess being this close to the holidays most everyone was visiting the many shops along the Port of San Francisco building.
