Waterfall & Old Crag - Sonora Pass, California

Returning from our trip to the Eastern Sierra for fall colors we took the less common route back to the Bay Area and traveled up and over the High Sierra via Sonora Pass at a maximum altitude of 9624 feet (2933 meters). Just past the top of the pass as you immediately start to descend a steep road down in to the canyon. As you do, you pass a small but remarkable waterfall on Deadman Creek. The waterfall is accompanied by a beautiful knotted old crag. The Fall colors help to set off the stark contrast of ancient white Sierra granite of Sonora Peek where it meets the deep dark hues from a less ancient volcanic eruption of the appropriate named Night Cap Peak. The contrast between these two peaks is so remarkable that you can easily spot them on Google Earth just North of Yosemite National Park.
