Art on San Francisco Bay

2012, marked the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge and it was an impressive party. 2013 will be the year San Francisco is treated to another big celebration, this time the impressive San Francisco / Oakland Bay Bridge known simply as the Bay Bridge will be celebrated. The vertical cables are being decorated with 25,000 computer controlled LEDs that light the bridge up from end to end. The celebration won’t officially begin till March 5th but this shot was taken during the testing on the span closest to the city and took a fair number of tries since the lights were blinking from the bottom up during the exposure. When finished the LEDs will blink in an ever changing patterns, flicking like stars or running back and forth the length of the bridge from dusk to midnight. Unlike the Golden Gate’s single night of incredible fireworks, this will remain lit for two years so you will be able to get a view of the special if you can visit the city within the next two years. It will be the largest single piece of artwork on the planet. The artwork called simply “Bay Lights” by artist Leo Villareal. The Grand Lighting begins at dusk on March 5th 2013.
